A Place You Have to See to Believe: Jr. Vice Orientation at the VFW National Home

June 1, 2026

There’s something truly special about Jr. Vice Orientation at the VFW National Home — so special that it has become one of our most cherished traditions. Each year, Jr. Vice Commanders and Presidents from across the United States and Europe travel to our campus in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, to experience firsthand the mission of the National Home. And every year, we’re reminded why we always say: the National Home is a place you have to see to believe.

For many of this year’s Jr. Vice participants, this was their very first visit to campus. From the moment they arrived, they were immersed in the beauty, warmth, and purpose that make the National Home unlike anywhere else.

The weekend began with a social dinner at VFW Post #2406 in Charlotte, Michigan, where old friendships were rekindled and new connections were made. The following morning, participants spent the day learning about the National Home’s mission and the life-changing programs we provide for veterans and military families. Guests toured campus, met staff, asked thoughtful questions, and got an inside look at the exciting future plans for the National Home.

While every part of the weekend was meaningful, the true highlight came from the powerful personal stories shared by alumni and current families.

Tim Nowak spoke emotionally about losing his father in the 1960s and how his mother brought him and his siblings to the VFW National Home during one of the most difficult times in their lives. Through tears, Tim shared how the National Home became a safe landing place for his family — a place that gave them hope, stability, and a future. “I don’t know what we would have done without the National Home,” he shared, a sentiment that resonated deeply with everyone in the room.

Aaron Lightner also reflected on his journey to the National Home after a difficult beginning in the late 1980s. He spoke about the opportunities, support, and resources he received here that helped shape his future and change the trajectory of his life. Thanks to the generosity of supporters and the strength of the National Home community, Aaron was able to build a brighter path forward.

After hearing from alumni, two current families shared what life at the National Home looks like today. Their stories echoed a common theme: stability, safety, healing, and support.

One especially moving moment came from Shawna, a participant in our RAVE program who grows flowers as part of her project. She beautifully connected her experience at the National Home to the growth of regenerative agriculture:

“Regenerative agriculture has taught me that when you care for something at the root, healing quietly spreads outward into everything connected to it. Healthy soil strengthens plants. Strong roots weather storms. And people are not all that different. Because of the VFW National Home, my family found steady ground again. We found community. We found hope. We found the space to heal, grow, and dream forward instead of simply surviving day to day.” Her words perfectly captured the heart of our mission.

The weekend was filled with inspiration, meaningful conversations, and unforgettable moments. We are always honored to open our campus and share the impact of the National Home with leaders from across the VFW and Auxiliary. Seeing their passion grow alongside their understanding of our mission reminds us why this work matters so deeply.

To every Jr. Vice Commander and President who joined us this year: thank you for spending the weekend with us. It was truly an honor to host you, and we look forward to welcoming you back to your National Home anytime.
