The Heroes to Hives program at the VFW National Home offers veterans a unique opportunity to learn the art and science of beekeeping while connecting with nature and fellow veterans. Designed to be both educational and hands-on, the program introduces participants to the rewarding world of beekeeping while building practical skills that can grow into a hobby, a passion, or even a small business.
Each year, a new cohort begins the program in February and meets monthly through October. Classes are held on the third Monday of each month and last approximately three hours, providing veterans with focused instruction while allowing flexibility for other commitments.
Participants learn from experienced instructors Gary Brown Sr., a Master Beekeeper, and Laura Lonsbery, a journeyman beekeeper currently working toward her Master Beekeeper certification. Together, they guide veterans through the fundamentals of hive management, bee health, honey production, and the business side of beekeeping.
More than a class, Heroes to Hives creates a supportive community where veterans can learn, work together, and reconnect with the natural world.
