When Service Meets Heart: The Home Depot Team’s Day of Impact

October 17, 2025

What happens when generosity meets a community with heart? For the VFW National Home, it meant a wave of excitement when Kate Hanna from the Home Depot Team called in September with extraordinary news: we had been chosen for their Celebration of Service. Not only did this honor come with a $15,000 grant for a new playground and two storage sheds, but it also brought a hands-on team of Home Depot associates ready to roll up their sleeves.

Our collaboration with Home Depot isn’t new—they helped us build our pavilions last year—but this time, the partnership felt even more special. On October 16, a crew of sixteen passionate volunteers from Home Depot arrived, learned about the National Home’s mission, and jumped into action. The energy was contagious as they worked to build the new sheds and playground, knowing their efforts would echo in children’s laughter for years to come.

Brecken & Terrie

The preparation began the day before, with Brecken and Terrie from the Women’s Council of Realtors joining our facilities crew to dismantle the old playground and ready the grounds for transformation. Their teamwork and dedication set the stage for the Home Depot team’s arrival.

Jake Raymond of Home Depot summed up the spirit of the day: “I like to help families in need.” Kimberly Steiner, another associate, added, “I had no idea this place existed—what a wonderful program!” Their words remind us that sometimes the biggest impact comes from those who care enough to show up.

We’re deeply grateful for everyone who gives their time, talent, or resources to support our mission. Want to make a difference for military and veteran families? Visit our website at vfwnationalhome.org/ and be part of the story.
