The weather was beautiful as Illinoisians made their trip to Michigan to see the VFW National Home for Illinois State Day 2025. First-time visitors explored the scenic grounds while returning guests marveled at the latest updates to the campus.
The day was filled with fun and family-friendly activities. National Home families delighted in competitive rounds of bingo and got creative while painting pumpkins—an event that had both kids and adults beaming with pride over their colorful creations. But, perhaps the most heartwarming moments were the warm reunions and new friendships.

This year, the event was made extra special by the generosity of Past Auxiliary President Cindy Watters, whose donation enabled the purchase of a new Zero Turn XMark lawnmower. The new equipment was proudly unveiled during the festivities. Further gratitude goes to Commander Eugene Blackwell and Auxiliary President Diane Ahrens, whose teamwork made it possible to raise funds for a much-needed four-wheeler for the Facilities Department.
Facilities Director Rick Stiver shared his gratitude, saying: “Thank you for providing equipment that helps our team maintain the campus efficiently. Your support is truly appreciated.”

The celebration extended beyond the campus, too. Just a week earlier, VFW Post 3873 in Naperville, Illinois, held their 12th annual Judd-a-Thon .1k, with all proceeds benefiting the National Home. The event’s infectious energy and overwhelming support for veterans and their families were described as “over the top incredible” by Katie Darling, National Home Public Relations & Communications Manager, who was able to attend the event. The funds that were raised for the event were presented to the National Home at Illinois State Day.
The National Home is deeply grateful for the outstanding support shown by the VFW Department of Illinois and its Auxiliary!
