VFW National Home Visits Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Office with Buddy Poppy Children

May 28, 2026

The VFW National Home was honored to visit the office of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer alongside two very special representatives of our community — 2025–2026 Buddy Poppy Child Lachlan and upcoming 2026–2027 Buddy Poppy Child Noelani.

During the visit, Lachlan had the privilege of presenting Governor Whitmer with a plaque in appreciation of the kindness and support she has shown the National Home throughout her term. Governor Whitmer proudly showcased her Lachlan Buddy Poppy pin, and Noelani had the special opportunity to personally pin the Governor as well.

The Buddy Poppy Child tradition is one deeply rooted in the history of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the VFW National Home. Since 1930, the VFW has selected a child from the National Home to help promote the Buddy Poppy program each year. The Buddy Poppy itself has long served as a symbol of sacrifice, remembrance, and support for veterans and their families.

Historically, the selected Buddy Poppy Child would travel to Washington, D.C. to present and pin the President of the United States as part of the annual Buddy Poppy campaign. For decades, this special tradition connected the National Home and its children directly with the nation’s leaders and highlighted the importance of honoring veterans and military families. While that presidential tradition ended many years ago, the spirit behind it continues today.

In recent years, the VFW National Home has proudly continued a similar tradition here in Michigan. Each April, as the Governor presents the Month of the Military Child proclamation, the Buddy Poppy Child has the honor of pinning Michigan’s governor in recognition of their support for military and veteran families across the state.

This meaningful moment has become a cherished tradition for the National Home, and one we hope will continue with future governors for years to come.

We are deeply grateful for Governor Whitmer’s continued support of the VFW National Home and the families we serve. Moments like these remind us of the enduring impact of the Buddy Poppy program and the importance of ensuring the next generation understands the sacrifices made by our nation’s veterans and military families.
