There’s something quietly powerful about the moment a child leans in to listen to a story.
This March, in celebration of Reading Month, that moment played out again and again inside the Early Education Center at the VFW National Home. Staff members stepped away from their daily responsibilities, picked up a book, and sat down with our youngest residents—turning simple pages into meaningful connections.
And what unfolded was more than just story time.
It was laughter at silly characters. Wide eyes at unexpected endings. Small voices asking big questions. It was children discovering that books can take them anywhere—and adults showing them that they are worth that time, that attention, that care.
Reading to children at a young age is one of the most impactful ways to support their development. It builds language skills, strengthens cognitive growth, and nurtures imagination. But just as importantly, it creates a sense of safety and belonging. When a child sits beside a caring adult and hears a story, they’re not just learning words—they’re learning that they matter.
At the VFW National Home, those moments are at the heart of everything we do.

Our staff didn’t just read books—they modeled curiosity, compassion, and connection. They showed these children that reading is not a chore, but a joy. Not an assignment, but an adventure.
And here’s the beautiful part: moments like these are made possible because of people like you.
Donor support helps sustain programs like our Early Education Center, where children are given not just education, but encouragement. It ensures that we can continue creating spaces where young minds grow, where confidence is built, and where a love of learning begins. It’s a reminder that there are people who will show up, who will listen, and who will invest in their future.
Because when a child learns to love reading, they gain more than a skill—they gain opportunity, independence, and a pathway forward.
So as we celebrate March is Reading Month, we also celebrate the community that makes it all possible. The staff who show up. The children who inspire us. And the donors who believe in the power of these moments.
Together, we’re not just reading stories.
We’re helping children write their own.
