As the refreshing warmth of spring arrives, so does the excitement of the 4H program at the VFW National Home! This year, we are thrilled to kick off our activities with six enthusiastic kids raising hogs and nine animal lovers showcasing their rabbits. The energy on campus is evident, and we can’t wait to see what these amazing kids will accomplish!

Nancy Bowers, the Activities and Recreation Specialist and the 4H leader, says she believes “the biggest impact on the kids is that it builds self-confidence to learn about their animal and then present it to a judge”. She added, “I love to see the enthusiasm of the kids when they get their animals and start working with them.” Nancy has worked at the VFW National Home for over 38 years and has been instrumental in nurturing this program. Her commitment continues to inspire both the kids and the National Home community.
Laura Lonsbery, our dedicated Support Services Supervisor, has been working with these young participants, and her passion for the program shines through. “I love that kids that may have come from urban or suburban areas, get the chance to experience raising an animal” she shares. “They become responsible for the wellbeing of another living creature and there are countless lessons to be learned that go along with that.”

Beyond the thrill of raising animals, this program offers valuable life lessons. The children engage in hands-on learning about animal care, but they also discover important values like teamwork, responsibility, and friendship. It’s a place where they can grow, bond, and enjoy the company of their peers while having lots of fun. We would like to extend heartfelt thank you to our Ohio friends, who donated the hogs, provided veterinary services, straw, and transportation to bring these animals to our campus for this year’s program. Your generosity is appreciated, and we are incredibly grateful!
As the season unfolds, we look forward to sharing more stories and highlights from the 4H program. Stay tuned for updates and let’s celebrate the inspiring journey of our kids at the VFW National Home!
