When VFW member James Shaffer met Zane, this year’s VFW Buddy Poppy Child and heard him speak at the National Convention this summer, he knew he had found the ideal caretaker for his large and valued collection of VFW pins. Zane, who lives at the National Home with his mother, brother and sister, is a fifth grade honor roll student who plays football, basketball and baseball for local teams. His great-grandfather was a member of the Army’s 503rd Parachute Regimental Combat Team in WWII and fought in the battle to retake the Philippine island of Corregidor. His great-uncle was also in the Army and served in Vietnam, and his grandfather is a Marine and a member of the VFW. Mr. Shaffer sought out Zane and his family at lunch during the convention, where he told Zane about his desire to give him his pin collection, saying he wanted the pins to be “in the hands of someone who appreciated them”. Mr. Shaffer presented the pins to Zane – enough to fill a shoebox – at this year’s Michigan Day celebration.
