The National Home celebrated the service of District 6 Trustee, Jim Mueller, at this year’s Annual Meeting of Life Members in October. Jim, from the Department of Missouri, first served on the VFW National Home for Children Board of Trustees during his term as VFW Commander-in-Chief and then was elected as District 6 Trustee in 2010, representing the Departments of Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and of course, Missouri. During his term, Jim served on all board committees. He was elected vice president of the board in 2013 and then president in 2014. Throughout that time, Jim has been extraordinarily conscientious, passionate and tireless in his work on behalf of the National Home. Jim, who served in Vietnam, vowed then that he would “do what he could to help veterans, their families and children, and those less fortunate than himself”. Since then, he has dedicated his faithful commitment to those who served with him all those years ago, and over the years, we who have served with Jim know he has kept his solemn promise. Jim has been instrumental in building relationships with the leadership and members of the VFW, its Auxiliary and many other organizations over the years. He played a significant role in building a strong partnership between the National Home and Veterans’ Committee of the International UAW, which ultimately resulted in their building and continuing sponsorship of the Stephen P. Yokich duplex here on campus. Jim has the loving spirit of a volunteer, and that is evident to all who know him. His kind and caring demeanor is contagious, and it is evident he happily puts others before himself. Jim is also just plain FUN! As a member of the Department of Missouri, he has been a part of the annual Fall Festival and Halloween party for years, and we all look forward to seeing what costume Jim will be wearing next! Jim, on behalf of the children and families, the staff, and your fellow trustees, we thank you for all you have done and will continue to do for your National Home.
