On Saturday July 26th, the VFW National Campus in Michigan was buzzing with excitement as 300 proud Ohioans gathered for Ohio State Day 2025. The air was thick with summer humidity and anticipation as the caravan rolled onto campus—all under the warm welcome of “Welcome Ohio” signs, held high by National Home staff and families.
The day started off with a breakfast fit for champions—ice cream and popcorn! Laughter and chatter filled the air as guests took guided tours around the campus, marveling at new updates and learning about the incredible mission of the National Home. The museum and store were buzzing with visitors, and the lawn games brought out everyone’s playful side.
But the highlight for many was the .1K Fun Run—a race that never fails to delight. This year’s star was Issac, who dashed across the finish line wearing his trusty Crocs. His victory was met with cheers, a beaming smile, and a standing ovation when he was brought on stage to receive a special coin from VFW National Home Executive Director Mike Wilson. The pride and joy on Issac’s face were truly unforgettable.

The formal program kicked off with inspiring words from Executive Director Mike Wilson and Ohio VFW National Home Chairman Terry Standforth, who spoke passionately about the mission of the National Home. Ohio State Commander Mike Milam and Auxiliary President Leigh Ann Zigler also shared heartfelt remarks about the enduring partnership between Ohio and the National Home.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Program Director Angie Harkins introduced the first recipient of the Red, White, and Blue Grant Program, Erin, who had recently moved out of the Ohio House to begin a new chapter. The grant, designed to help families transitioning from the program purchase household essentials for their new homes, was a powerful reminder of the impact of this community—so much so that Mike Wilson, visibly moved, declared, “This is what it’s all about. Moments of victories like this one.”
The day culminated in the Parade of Checks, with Ohio’s generosity reaching new heights. The total donations reached an astounding $476,094.25—the largest state day contribution in the National Home’s history! Mike Wilson, awed by the outpouring of support, warmly invited the Ohio group back anytime. Lunch was a classic summer spread of hot dogs, burgers, and of course, more ice cream.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the Ohioans who made this day—and this extraordinary generosity—possible. We couldn’t do what we do without you. Check out more memories from this special day in the photo gallery linked below!
