National Home’s cozy library has something for everyone

Nestled away on the third floor of the Community Center is a cozy space where bookshelves line the wall and comfortable spaces await book-lovers young and old. The National Home’s community library is just one of the great spaces in the Community Center, sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary. The library offers something for every member of the family, including a selection of hardcover books and board games for parents and children under four to enjoy together at the library and monthly Storytime for children ages four through third grade. Young people in fourth grade through high school can take part in Book Talk, a monthly meetup where they discuss books in the library based on that month’s topic. For January’s theme, “Hop into Healthy Habits”, staff pulled out books about being organized, reducing stress, and healthy eating for youth. Attendees got an overview of the books the library has available and then taste tested some healthy snack options, including avocadoes (guacamole,) soy nuts and kiwi fruit. In February, the group will be discussing the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. There will be a “Chocolate Olympics” with fun games using chocolate foodstuffs, and a screening of the movie as well. The library hosts a variety of special events throughout the year – including visiting celebrities like Olaf, from the popular Disney movie, Frozen. Residents also have the opportunity to go on field trips to other local libraries, take part in the summer reading program, play a game of chess or research a topic of interest, all through the National Home’s library. The library was just one of the programs featured at the annual Program Open House last month. The Open House gives residents a chance to mingle and learn more about classes and other educational and recreational offerings available to them at the National Home.
