National Home Alum Comes Full Circle, Joins Staff

It’s like coming home for Brian Daniels, who joined the VFW National Home staff on March 18 to serve as the Community Development/Alumni Engagement Manager.

“It feels like I’ve come full circle because my time living at the National Home led me to serve in the military, and now I’m back at the Home serving veterans,” he said.

Brian came to live at the National Home in 1996 when he was just 10 years old, along with his mother and siblings. It was the first time he had experienced stability and was finally given a chance to have a real childhood.

His exposure to veterans planted a seed in his heart during his three years living at the Home that served as the catalyst when the 9/11 tragedy struck.

Brian knew he wanted to fight for his country, so he immediately enlisted in the Army and was sent to Iraq. Toward the end of his tour, a Humvee he was riding in on combat patrol struck an IED, killing his four comrades immediately and severing Brian’s foot. While doctors were able to reattach it, Brian has spent years in rehabilitation and now possesses a Purple Heart.

Recharge House Sponsorship and Energize Alumni

In Brian’s new role for the National Home, he will work with all Directors to rebuild and manage the house sponsorship program.  At the same time, he will engage alums and build their involvement with the National Home through communication and periodic activities.

For years, Brian has served as a volunteer ambassador for the National Home through speaking engagements, videos, magazine articles, and campus visits.  He also brings relationship-building experience through his service on the Lansing City Council and operating his own gym, EmPOWer Lansing.

“I am excited to be part of something that actually changes the lives of veterans so we can make the world a better place,” said Brian.

“Brian’s unique connection to the Home and powerful relationship-building skills will be a great asset to the National Home,” stated Development Director Sue Alverson.

If Brian looks familiar, you may have seen him on the VFW Magazine cover in September 2020. Brian is a member of VFW Post #3293 in Grand Ledge, MI, and is a life member of the VFW.
