Celebrating Service: A Day with the Hell Fish of the VFW National Home

May 21, 2025

On a sunny Saturday, May 3rd, our team, the Hell Fish of the VFW National Home, set out on a mission that truly embodies what it means to give back. We took part in the VFW Day of Service, an initiative under the #StillServing campaign that unites VFW members across the country to showcase the positive impact we can make in our communities. This year, we were excited to head to the Michigan Veterans Home in Grand Rapids, where we had the honor of escorting veterans and their families through the West Michigan Mustang Club Car Show.

But what’s a day of service without a little coffee and donuts? With our “Cup of Joe” on the road, we served up delicious brews and sweet treats to over 30 veterans. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, storytelling, and camaraderie as we connected with these incredible individuals. “All coffee and donuts got used up. Nothing left over but smiles!” shared Mike Wilson, the Executive Director of the VFW National Home. His words captured the spirit of the day perfectly—there’s nothing quite like the joy of sharing a simple meal and good company.

The Hell Fish isn’t just a group; it’s a community – a veteran employee organization at the VFW National Home dedicated to coming together, supporting one another, and championing the needs of our fellow veteran residents. We recognize that community support is vital, and we actively engage in various activities throughout the year. One of our highlights is the quarterly “Cup of Joe,” where veterans, staff, residents, and community members gather not to accomplish tasks but to enjoy coffee, eat donuts, and strengthen our bonds.

Additionally, we have the solemn honor of participating in events like the respectful disposal of American flags in collaboration with the Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care organization. It’s a poignant moment where flags are cremated with veterans’ remains, and one star is preserved to be memorialized alongside their ashes—a true testament to their service and sacrifice.

Spending time with our fellow veterans, who have given so much for our country, fills our hearts with purpose. The ability to brighten their day and share genuine moments made our trip to the Michigan Veterans Home incredibly worthwhile.

Days like these remind us of the impact we can have when we come together as a community. The smiles we shared, the stories we exchanged, and the bonds we strengthened are what being a part of the VFW is all about. We look forward to more opportunities to serve and connect, because our passion for supporting veterans drives us, and together, we can continue to make a difference.
