March 7, 2025, marks a momentous occasion in the heartwarming history of the VFW National Home. As we gathered to celebrate the dedication of the Missouri II/Pollett House, named after the VFW Dept. of Missouri for sponsoring the house and then honor of the first family to reside on campus. VFW Department of Missouri Commander DePontee, Auxiliary President Amy Jo Lett, and several other VFW and Auxiliary Department representatives were in attendance to celebrate the ribbon cutting. We were reminded of the legacy of resilience and community spirit that defines this incredible place. This modern residence, the first veteran-family home built in the last 14 years, stands as the 43rd home on campus and symbolizes our unwavering commitment to providing quality housing for veteran families.

The story of the Pollett family resonates deeply within these walls. In 1925, tragedy struck when Sgt. Edward Pollett lost his life in a streetcar accident, leaving his wife, Mrs. Pollett, and their six children facing an uncertain future. In their time of need, the VFW community rallied around them, quickly arranging for the family to move to the National Home. On March 9, 1925, the Polletts became the first residents, forever becoming a part of this home’s rich tapestry.
Their journey here was filled with cherished memories. Lillian Pollett, the eldest child, painted a vivid picture of life on campus in her letters—snowy winters filled with sledding and vibrant summers bursting with laughter, fishing, and working in the family’s vegetable garden. The bond the Pollett children shared with their home remained strong, even as they grew up, two joined the Navy, and forged their paths in life, continually returning to visit the place they considered home. We were honored to welcome special guests at the ribbon cutting, descendants of the Pollett family, Susan Pollett-Schummer, and her daughter Kathryn Schummer, both from Chicago.
The dedication ceremony was a heartfelt reminder of our shared history, honoring those who came before us while looking forward to the families who will soon create their own memories within the Missouri II/Pollett House. With blessings, prayers, and heartfelt reflections, we celebrated not just a house, but a nurturing environment that welcomes veterans and their families with open arms. As we close this chapter and look towards the future, let us be inspired by the Pollett family’s story—a tale of overcoming adversity, community support, and the power of home. Each new family that arrives at the VFW National Home carries the hope of starting anew, much like the Polletts did a century ago. In the spirit of resilience and community, we are reminded that together, we can build a brighter future for those who have given so much for our country.

Let this dedication serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration, encouraging every one of us to extend our hands and hearts to those in need. The legacy of the VFW National Home is built on compassion, and it is our continuing mission to foster a supportive and loving environment for all veterans and their families. As we move forward, let us carry this spirit of unity within us, nurturing each other and honoring the sacrifices made by those who have served. Together, we can make a difference—one home, one family at a time.
