Celebrating a Century of Service: 100-Year Anniversary Gala

February 19, 2025

VFW National Home’s 100-Year Anniversary Gala on February 8, 2025 was truly a night to remember. Two hundred supporters, alumni, and staff of the VFW National Home gathered at the DoubleTree by Hilton in downtown Lansing to commemorate the milestone: 100 years of dedicated service to veterans and their families! This momentous event was not just a celebration; it was a heartfelt acknowledgment of the unwavering commitment to honoring our veterans and their sacrifices.

Despite her absence, Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer made her presence felt by sending a heartfelt video congratulating the VFW National Home on this significant anniversary. She also took a moment to give a special shoutout to Buddy Poppy Layla, which brought an extra touch of warmth to the occasion. Brian Love, Director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, read the Governors Tribute that was awarded to the VFW National Home. It was quoted as saying “With each passing year, this organization continues to leave an irreplaceable and life-changing mark on the lives of our valued and respected veterans and their families. The VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids serves as an inspiration to all and demonstrates the importance of community support across many generations”.

Lansing’s Mayor, Andy Schor’s words resonated with the audience as he reflected on the longstanding relationship between the VFW National Home and the City of Lansing. His speech highlighted the essential role of community in uplifting and supporting our veterans. The applause that followed underscored the gathering’s collective gratitude for those who have served and continue to serve.

One of the night’s most touching moments came when past National Home Executive Director Patrice Green, who held the role from 2004 to 2019, was met with a standing ovation. Her passion and leadership have left a lasting impact on the organization, reminding everyone present of the powerful connections and relationships built over the years.

The VFW’s esteemed leadership was well represented, with Commander-In-Chief Al Lipphardt, Adjutant General Dan West, and Quartermaster General Marc Garduno in attendance. Executive Director Mike Wilson and Board of Trustees President Jerry Blake presented Lipphardt with a special commemorative coin, encased in a frame and numbered 1899—the year the VFW was founded. This thoughtful gift symbolized the enduring support the VFW has extended to the National Home since 1925, honoring the dead by helping the living.

The evening also honored the invaluable contributions of both the VFW Auxiliary and Military Order of the Cootie and its Auxiliary. The VFW Auxiliary was represented by National Auxiliary President Brenda Bryant and National Secretary/Treasurer Ann Panteleakos, the Military Order of the Cootie, represented by Supreme Commander Robbie Normand and the Military Order of the Cootie Auxiliary with Supreme President Patricia “Patches” Presfield in attendance. Wilson and Blake presented each group with framed commemorative coins to celebrate their dedication to the mission of the VFW National Home.

The evening was an unforgettable experience, brimming with energy beyond just speeches and presentations. Attendees were drawn to a vibrant table featuring commemorative coins, beautifully crafted 100-Year Anniversary books, and tempting raffle tickets for a dazzling $6,000 diamond. The anticipation soared as the winner of the diamond raffle was revealed in a thrilling “last man standing” format, each number being called out adding to the suspense. Finally, the moment came when lucky number six was announced, belonging to June Haynes of Ohio. With a joyous smile, she revealed that she would be gifting the stunning diamond to her son, enabling him to propose to his girlfriend in the most special way possible. What a heartwarming gesture!

As the night wore on, laughter, dancing, and gratitude filled the air. The event wasn’t just a look back at the past century; it was an optimistic nod to the future. Mike Wilson lifted his glass, leading the attendees in a heartfelt toast, celebrating the triumphs of the past while looking forward to the next 100 years of service and support.

In a world that often seems disconnected, gatherings like these remind us of the power of community and the importance of honoring those who serve. The 100-Year Anniversary Gala was not only a tribute to the incredible history of the VFW National Home but also a call to action for everyone to continue supporting veterans and their families in any way possible. As we reflect on this beautiful evening, we can’t help but feel hopeful for the future. Together, we can ensure that the mission of providing care and support to our veterans and their families remains as strong as ever. Here’s to 100 years of service—may the next century be filled with even more compassion, community, and love for those who have given so much for our freedom.
