As June drew to a close, we gathered to honor a remarkable milestone in our history: the centennial anniversary of the VFW National Home. On June 27, 2025, our campus was alive with nostalgia, joy, and a profound sense of belonging as alumni from across generations reunited for a day filled with heartfelt memories and new connections.

The day began with a powerful emotional moment. Betty Adamson, our Buddy Poppy child from 1932, spoke with tears in her eyes, expressing her heartfelt connection to our home. “This is my home, this is a marvelous place,” she said, a sentiment echoed by all who were present. We welcomed a vibrant crowd of alumni and their families, a testament to the lasting impact our community has made over the years.
In honor of our alumni, a beautiful willow tree was planted by Lake Romanis, symbolizing our deep-rooted connections. Alumni Tim Nowak and Executive Director Mike Wilson had the honor of planting this tree, accompanied by a plaque that reads: “In honor of our 100th anniversary, our shared roots, lasting bonds, and the strength to carry forward.” This tree stands as a reminder that our relationships nurture and support generations of individuals.
The following day, the excitement continued to build as we prepared for an unforgettable celebration. We welcomed over 2,500 guests from all corners of the U.S. and even one from Germany! The air was electric with laughter and joy as attendees enjoyed carnival rides reminiscent of the summer festivities our National Home used to host for the children and the community alike.
Classic cars took center stage at the car cruise-in, showcasing an astounding array spanning from the 1930s to the latest models, much to the delight of auto enthusiasts thanks to the Charlotte Cruisers Club’s assistance.

Our celebration was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including the Commander-in-Chief of the VFW, Al Lipphardt, and VFW Auxiliary National President Brenda Bryant. They unveiled a class project that will proudly stand in our Tribute Park, symbolizing their commitment to our mission. The day was further marked by the ceremonial capping of our new Buddy Poppy child, Lochlan, a tradition that honors the next generation.
Despite the summer heat, guests kept cool with delicious Kona Ice, refreshing Boba drinks, and ice cream while savoring the culinary offerings from various food trucks throughout the day. A heartfelt thanks to Charlotte VFW Post 2406 for running the beer tent and ensuring everyone stayed refreshed, as well as Don Derby and his crew from the post who flipped burgers and served up hot dogs.

What’s a celebration without music? The Guitars for Vets Spring Class of 2025 kicked things off, setting the stage for three fantastic bands that had everyone dancing. From captivating melodies to energized performances, our guests enjoyed a lively atmosphere that made the day even more special. As the sun set and a cool breeze swept in, a spectacular laser light show transformed the night sky, culminating in a rousing rendition of “God Bless the USA,” with everyone on their feet singing in unity.
As we reflect on this monumental celebration, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who attended and contributed to making this event such a remarkable success. It was a time to celebrate not just the past century of service and camaraderie, but also to look forward to the future. As Mike Wilson reminded us, “Let’s begin looking forward to the next century of service.”
Here’s to many more years of making lasting memories, nurturing friendships, and providing a sanctuary for all who walk through our doors. Together, we will continue to support and uplift one another as we carry our mission into the future. Thank you for being part of our journey!
