Because of You: One Veteran’s Story of Advocacy, Partnership, and Possibility

February 11, 2026

When Veterans encounter barriers to the benefits they’ve earned, the impact can ripple through every part of their lives. For Larry, a Michigan Veteran, that barrier came in the form of a long-standing administrative error in his military records — an issue that delayed critical compensation for years.

Like many Veterans, Larry tried to navigate a complex system on his own. But correcting errors buried deep in military paperwork can feel overwhelming without knowledgeable support and strong advocacy.

That’s where the VFW National Home made a difference.

Through a collaborative effort between the VFW National Home and the Michigan Army National Guard, Larry’s case was carefully reviewed, corrected, and ultimately resolved. What once felt out of reach became possible because people took the time to listen, investigate, and act. By fixing the administrative error, Larry was able to recover back pay benefits that amounted to over $25,000.

At the center of this work is the VFW National Home’s commitment to ensuring Veterans and their families are never left to face these challenges alone. Executive Director Mike Wilson worked closely with Dr. Jerred Johnson, Director of Veteran Services, who was brought on to expand the National Home’s ability to provide expert guidance, referrals, and hands-on support to Veteran and military families across the country, as well as on-campus.

Dr. Johnson’s leadership reflects an important evolution in the National Home’s mission — extending veteran services and outreach well beyond our campus to meet families wherever they are. Through this growing program, Veterans receive help navigating benefits, correcting records, accessing resources, and finding answers when the system feels impossible to manage.

“This is exactly why the VFW National Home exists,” Wilson shared. “Veterans and their families should never carry the burden of administrative errors alone. Our role is to stand with them and make sure they receive the support they’ve earned.”

The successful resolution of Larry’s case was also made possible through the dedication of Michigan Army National Guard partners, including members of the G1 team whose careful review and attention to detail uncovered the discrepancy that had gone unnoticed for years. Their teamwork and commitment ensured Larry and his family could move forward with peace of mind during a season meant for togetherness.

Larry’s story is just one example — but it represents countless Veterans who need advocacy, expertise, and someone willing to take the time to help.
