An Honor Hosting the Honor Flight

July 24, 2025

On a sunlit July 14, a group of 33 veterans and 10 guardians (many of whom were veterans themselves) set out from Lima, Ohio, on a heartwarming journey to Eaton Rapids, Michigan. Their destination? The historic campus of the VFW National Home, a place dedicated to honoring and supporting those who have served. As the bus doors swung open, anticipation and camaraderie filled the air. Each veteran was warmly welcomed by the National Home staff, and it wasn’t long before new friendships blossomed, turning strangers into instant companions.

The day came alive thanks to the Hellfish, the National Home’s dynamic veteran group. Eleven enthusiastic veteran staff members stepped up to give guided tours, offer personal rides for Honor Flight members, and share heartfelt stories over steaming cups of coffee. The camaraderie was further enriched by four dedicated members from the Veteran Regenerative Agriculture Demonstration Farm (VRAD), whose presence underscored the spirit of teamwork and renewal. Veterans from every era mingled, laughed, and built a stronger sense of community together.

After a warm welcome, the guests gathered in the Community Center auditorium for an introduction to the VFW National Home and its heartfelt mission. For many, it was their first glimpse into the impact and legacy of the organization. With appetites satisfied and curiosity piqued, the veterans and their guardians set off to explore the vibrant campus—touring the grounds, delving into local history at the museum, and discovering unique finds at the campus store.

As the day drew to a close, Mike Melvin, the Honor Flight coordinator, shared that the journey home was alive with chatter and joy—33 veterans, all smiles, reliving the day’s highlights. Reflecting on the day, Mike Wilson, Executive Director of the VFW National Home, shared “We are truly honored to have these veterans visit our campus. They’re truly the icon of America and our gratitude for what they have done and what they have sacrificed for us will be forever remembered here at the VFW National Home.” Hosting the Honor Flight at the VFW National Home was a true privilege. To all who served: thank you, and remember, our doors are always open for your return.
