A Little Help From Our Friends
With their bright orange shirts and their can-do spirit, the Team Depot crew from District #179 was hard to miss as they bustled about the VFW National Home for Children campus completing several renovation projects at the Scout Cabin overlooking Lake Romanis. Volunteers, led by District Team Depot Captain Frank Sutherland, Store Manager Mark Gridley and Project Team Leader Randy Hartford, and aided by a $9,700 grant from The Home Depot Foundation, completed a 20′ x 24′ observation deck attached to the Scout Cabin overlooking Lake Romanis, painted the bridge connecting the cabin to the main campus area and installed new windows in the cabin. National Home residents and veterans participating in the Battle Creek VA Medical Center’s Transitional Recovery Program alike enjoy the recreational area surrounding Lake Romanis. The new observation deck not only provides more space for people to gather and enjoy the beauty of Lake Romanis, it also makes it possible for non-ambulatory veterans to join in on the fun. In addition, new windows in the Scout Cabin make it more structurally sound and better able to withstand harsh Michigan winters. Finally, the bridge looks as good as new with its fresh coat of paint. Thank you Home Depot! See pictures of the project here.
