When Anna arrived at the VFW National Home, she had a dream—a dream of building a better life for her two sons, grounded in stability, purpose, and independence. Thanks to the supportive community and programs at the National Home, that dream has become a reality.
Anna created a safe, nurturing home where her children could grow and thrive. They became deeply involved in everything the National Home had to offer—after-school and summer programs, work crew experiences, and special holiday events. Both boys discovered a love for music and took piano lessons throughout their time here. Her oldest has since graduated high school and is now working full-time. Her youngest is just beginning high school, following closely in his brother’s footsteps.
From the start, Anna set clear goals: achieve financial independence, build her credit, and save for a home. Without the burden of rent or a mortgage while at the National Home, Anna made the most of her opportunity—saving diligently and budgeting wisely. Her determination paid off. She raised her credit score, saved a significant down payment, and recently closed on her very first home. She is now a proud homeowner.
Throughout her journey, Anna juggled work as a restaurant manager and a self-employed cleaner for local businesses, allowing her to remain flexible and present for her sons. As they grew more independent, Anna pursued her next goal—full-time employment with benefits. Today, she’s achieved that too, now working in a role that provides stability, health insurance, and retirement benefits.
Anna’s story is one of grit, love, and incredible perseverance. It’s also a testament to what’s possible when families are given the tools and support they need to succeed.
Because of you, stories like Anna’s happen every day. Thank you for making this journey possible.
