On August 16, 2025, the VFW National Home became a place of shared emotion and healing as 150 veterans and their families gathered for a powerful screening of “Brothers After War.” The room was filled with tearful eyes and quiet reflection as we witnessed the true realities our military men and women face throughout their service.

The documentary “Brothers After War” follows Jake Rademacher as he reconnects with the elite Soldiers and Marines he once embedded with during the Iraq War. Through a mix of past and present footage, Jake invites us on a journey that is at times insightful, humorous, and deeply moving. We join twelve men and women as they explore the pain of loss, the search for meaning, and the resilience that carries them from the battlefield to civilian life.
What began as a film has grown into a workshop, touching the lives of more than 40,000 Service Members and their families. The “Brothers After War” Seminar, built around Jake’s acclaimed film, and executive produced by Gary Sinise, is an evidence-based experience designed to support veterans and their loved ones as they navigate the invisible wounds of war. The seminar provides a safe, engaging space to explore service, sacrifice, moral injury, and resilience through open conversations and interactive sessions, all backed by a strong sense of community. Led by combat veterans — many of whom also hold Doctorates in Social Work — these skilled facilitators use their own stories as powerful catalysts for growth and healing.
Heartfelt connections were made that day. A Vietnam veteran opened his heart, sharing the pain and pride of watching his own son choose the same path of service. Another attendee stood and, with a sense of wonder, realized he had served alongside that very son. In these moments, the room became a safe haven — a circle of understanding and compassion.

Stories of struggle and perseverance filled the air. Veterans spoke candidly about battles with depression, addiction, and the haunting shadow of suicidal thoughts. One attendee, his voice trembling, admitted how difficult it was to be in such a large crowd. When Jake gently asked why he chose to come, the Marine, choked with emotion, simply pointed to his children on either side of him and said, “For them.” Those two words echoed in every heart, a testament to the love and hope that carry our veterans forward.
Jake reminded everyone in the room that we don’t have to have it all together to make a difference. “You don’t have to have it all together to help others,” he said, gently encouraging us to find healing through service. Even in our brokenness, we have the power to lift one another up. His message was clear: keep moving forward, “get off the X,” and don’t let pain hold you back from helping and connecting with others.
The day was filled with powerful moments and left a lasting imprint on every soul present. The VFW National Home was honored to host the event. A huge thank you Warfighters United, the VFW Michigan Department of Michigan, the American Legion, and many others who helped make this event a success. A heartfelt thank you to Jake Rademacher and his team for putting on a fantastic seminar.
