Jerry Peterson’s dedication to the National Home stems from decades of service to the armed forces, a family military history, and his continued service to the VFW and veteran support programs.
Jerry is a combat veteran of Vietnam and Desert Storm in the USAF and has 33 years of military service. He was a C- 141 flight engineer for 28 years, with over 5,000 hours.
Jerry’s Father served for 30 years, both in the Navy and in the Army. He completed numerous submarine war patrols during WWII. He transferred to the Army and completed tours of duty in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Both he and Jerry were on active duty in Vietnam at the same time.
Jerry is currently Junior Vice Commander for the VFW Department of Nevada, as well as State Chairman for the National Home. On a recent visit to the National Home campus, Jerry was struck by the serenity and joy he witnessed there.
“It’s so peaceful and such a beautiful place. You could tell that these children were having a positive experience, interacting and playing with each other.”
Lately, Jerry has also been impressed by our Military and Veteran Family Helpline.
“Sometimes people just don’t know where to turn. With Helpline, these people can get help with their individual needs right where they live.”
As a veteran who’s been involved with the National Home for some time, Jerry knows the important role that it plays for struggling military families.
“A lot of the families are single parents on their own and who are hurting. The National Home is a refuge for these families that need assistance. It brings families together.”
After being stationed in places as disparate as Virginia and Germany, Jerry now resides in Henderson, Nevada with his wife Linda, to whom he has been married for 43 years. Now that’s a loyal soldier!
