Shining the Spotlight on Veteran Staff: Jimmy Lawson

If you have ever visited the National Home for a summertime event, you have probably seen Jimmy Lawson in action. He is always here early, setting up, fixing last minute hiccups, and making sure everything looks just right. His hard work and reliability balanced with his goofy and fun-loving disposition make him a valued member of the National Home’s maintenance department. Jimmy is a third generation Army vet, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He joined shortly after the tragic events of September 11th and served four years active-duty and four years in the Army Reserves...

Entering Into the Fourth Quarter Of An Unusual Year: A Message From The Executive Director

On behalf of our community of veterans, their families, our Board of Trustees and our staff here at the VFW National Home for Children, I welcome you to what is the 4th quarter of the year 2020. Although the first three quarters of this year have been confusing, chaotic and somber for our nation, your generosity and support over these past months has brightened our hearts and spirits as we enter into the fourth quarter of the year. Upon reflection, I recalled that even after the dark day of September 11th, drenched in shock and sorrow, we rallied, we came together, as a nation and as a people,...

Nathan Sesco: A Tale of Dedication to Veterans

When Nathan Sesco found himself in Grand Rapids, MI for a wedding in 2014, he took the opportunity to visit the VFW National Home for Children that he had heard so much about. As soon as he saw the sprawling 80-acre campus and its surrounding property, he knew he had something to offer. The owner of a construction company, Nathan takes his duty to fellow veterans seriously, employing many of them, and encouraging what he calls a kind of therapy that comes with working with your hands. “Veterans need a mission after they return from service!” says Nathan. Later that year, Nathan came back with...

Mississippi House Sponsorship Change

Recently the sponsorship of the Mississippi House changed from Post #4272 in Columbus, Mississippi, to the VFW Department of Mississippi. Constructed in 1929, the Mississippi House was originally called the Michigan Unit. At the time of its completion, the first National Home residents moved into the home. The little farmhouse that had previously housed the family was then used to house farmhands. The VFW Department of Michigan sponsored the home, ultimately called Michigan 2, until 2013, when sponsorship was then taken on by the VFW Department of Mississippi Post #4272. We are so glad that...
