“There
was some doubt expressed by child welfare authorities as to whether
the unique 'family unit' idea conceived by the Veterans of Foreign
Wars would prove feasible. As a result, the VFW 'child village'
project was looked up in the light of an experiment. Today - five
years later - all doubt as to the success of the VFW undertaking
has been dispelled.”

At
the VFW National Home for Children we are “All About the Children.”
Do you know a child or family who may benefit from the love, care
and education happening at the National Home? Children, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren of VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members whose
parents are deceased, disabled, or need assistance providing needed
care are eligible to apply for residency in one of the National
Homes programs.
Services are available to children and families within five distinct
programs at the National Home, and support services are also an
important function of providing the best in love, care and education
to the children who reside at the National Home. See the menu at
left to explore the National Homes unique programs. Services
are available to all children who qualify based on the National
Homes Statement
of Eligibility.
Services for children are available at the VFW National Home for
Children when the childs parent, grandparent, or great grandparent
is, or if deceased, at the time of death was a member in good standing
of the Veterans of Foreign wars or Ladies Auxiliary, and the childs
custodian cannot provide an adequate home for the child. Services
are also available for children of active duty military service
personnel, regardless of current VFW membership or eligibility,
who are not able to provide adequate care for their children through
the approved family plan arrangement.
Children living at the VFW National Home for Children receive the
following on-campus services: educational support, recreational
opportunities, and individual and “family” counseling.
All food, housing, and utilities are provided. The National Home
maintains contacts with local community agencies and professionals
to provide individual psychological services, and both specialized
and routine medical, dental, and eye care services. Clothing is
purchased locally and children attend Eaton Rapids Public Schools.
