One major and essential area of services at the National Home is the Education Department programs and services. The staff and volunteers of the Education Department are dedicated to providing the tools necessary to help youth living at the National Home succeed academically.

Interventions are targeted to all age groups, from pre-school to college. Story time in the National Home library introduces pre-school children to books and helps develop pre-literacy skills. A kindergarten readiness class offers pre-school children the opportunity to practice and develop skills that will prepare them for elementary school.

As National Home residents start school, their academic progress is monitored and tutoring and assistance is required for those students who have identified academic concerns. Tutoring sessions can be set up for the entire school year or for short-term needs. Students with poor organization skills are also referred to National Home tutors to learn organizational techniques.

Many children at the National Home have special education programming needs and the National Home works with a local school psychologist to provide testing to identify educational deficits. These areas of need are targeted in tutoring throughout their school years.

The Education Department is also home to the National Home computer lab. This lab maintains 11 up-to-date computers, a scanner and a printer with educational programming for children of all ages. Children can learn how to type, explore United States history, practice their math skills, type term papers and learn how to effectively and efficiently use the Internet for research. This lab is open for children and single parents to use after school under the supervision of Education staff and volunteers.

The National Home library is also maintained by Education Department staff. The library contains thousands of books including: reference, paperbacks, picture books, and a large video library. Each year, the National Home receives donations of books, which allows for the rotation of new materials to keep children interested in reading. Children are able to check out books and take them home with them, or use the quiet library area for study or leisure reading. Donations of school supplies are also managed by the Education Department. Supplies are replenished by the Department of Ohio each fall, and all residents may come to pick up supplies as needed.
