For more than 80 years the National Home has been caring for the children and families of our nation’s veterans. Thousands of children, visitors, employees and community members have felt the impact of the National Home. With those scores of people has come a standardization of some policies and procedures to help guide the National Home. Here are just a few examples that may improve your National Home experience.

Statement of Eligibility
Services for children are available at the VFW National Home for Children when the child’s parent, grandparent, or great grandparent is, or if deceased, at the time of death was a member in good standing of the Veterans of Foreign Wars or Ladies Auxiliary, and the child’s custodian cannot provide an adequate home for the child. Services are also available for children of active duty military service personnel, regardless of current VFW membership or eligibility, who are not able to provide adequate care for their children through the approved family plan arrangement.

Visitor Policy
We are very proud of our beautiful campus and love to show it off, but we are obligated to protect our resident’s right to privacy as well as to ensure their safety and dignity. Therefore, when visiting the campus, we ask that you register at the Visitor’s Desk in the Front Lobby of the Administration Building.

So that we can best serve you, please contact the Public Relations Department at (800) 424-8360 to schedule your tour. Tours are typically scheduled between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. There are typically three types of tours:
  1. General Tours:
This tour includes the Administration Building, Guest Lodge, Chapel, Community Center, Health & Education Building, Museum, and campus grounds.

  2. Specific House/Building Tours:
Tours of occupied houses include common living areas. Arrangements are made in concert with a member of the Public Relations Department, the Program Staff or Management Team.

  3. Special Project Tours:
Members of the Board of Trustees, National Officers (or representatives) of the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary and others who may hold a financial responsibility or interest in a specific project (envisioned or underway), may tour in concert with a member of the management team or designated staff.

If the Administration Building is closed when you visit the National Home, please feel free to drive through and tour the campus.

Public Act 116 prohibits smoking on our campus. State of Michigan Licensing Regulations prohibit illegal drugs or alcohol on campus.

Gift Policy
Gifts for a specific child, parent, or

residents of a House -- We are unable to provide names of the children and parents that live at the National Home because of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). It is also very difficult to accept and fairly distribute gifts designated for one particular child or parent. Therefore, we discourage donors from giving a gift for a specific child or parent. Instead, give a gift designated for one of the Categories of Giving. Graduation Gifts and Santa's Helpers donations are exceptions to this rule as the National home has established policies relating to these specific programs.

GRADUATION GIFTS
Graduation is a very special time for our young adults. If you would like to give a gift to our graduating students, send a check payable to the "VFW National Home for Children" and note on it "For Graduates." This gift will be equally distributed amongst all graduates. Call (800) 424-8360 late in the school year to find out how many students will graduate this year.

The 2007-2008 Giving Guide will let you know exactly how to help the VFW National Home for Children.  Download a PDF copy by clicking this link.
